How to mulch your trees By Jerry Naiser Keeping the area 1 to 2 feet away from the tree trunk is very important. This includes free from raised mulch, grass and weeds. Proper mulching is done in a “doughnut” type fashion, with the area next to the trunk being at grade and the outer edges at about a depth of 4 inches. This will help prevent damage from lawn mowers and string trimmers, as well as help retain moister for the tree and provide some additional nutrients for the tree from the composting of the mulch.
